Apple’s “iKey” Wants To Unlock All Doors

Pickens writes “The Telegraph reports that Apple is developing technology, already being nicknamed the ‘iKey,’ which will allow users to gain access to their office and unlock their car or front door with a single electronic device like an iPhone. Users would simply have to enter a PIN and wave the device over an electronic pad fitted beside a door to open it. ‘The device can communicate with an external device to open a lock. By way of example, the electronic device may be a model of an iPhone,’ says the newly released patent application. ‘The external device may be any suitable electronic device such as a portable media player, personal data assistant or electronic lock that may be used to access a door, car, house, or other physical area.’ The technology behind the invention is known as Near Field Communication; it allows electronic devices to transmit information when in proximity. ‘If true, it’s a very big deal. As well as opening doors and unlocking your car, it could also turn your iPhone into an electronic wallet and ID card,’ says Leander Kahney, a consumer technology expert. ‘The trouble is that the technology hasn’t gone completely mainstream. If Apple were to adopt the technology, they would likely set the standard, and that would drive widespread adoption as everyone scrambles to make their systems iPhone-friendly.’”

Venezuela Bans Hostile Videogames and Toys

An anonymous reader writes “In an effort to ‘help improve child education and prevent misconduct,’ the Venezuelan government began enforcing a law on March 3rd banning war videogames and toys, imposing a fine and 2.5 years in prison on the production, distribution, sale, hiring and use of video games and toys inciting violent behavior. Alberto Federico Ravell, former director of opposing news network Globovision, has already come on twitter denouncing the authorities for seizing imported Gameboy, Wii and PlayStation 3 consoles, due to considering them violent.”

How To: Heroically Salvage a Scratched-Up iPhone [Guides]

One drop. Five minutes in a pocket with your keys. Three months of regular use. This is all it takes for an iPhone’s backplate to go from a mirror-like shine to a scratched-to-hell eyesore. Here’s how to fix it.

MacRumors forum member Shenaniganz08 salvaged an iPhone 3G from eBay, sanding, buffing and polishing it back from the brink of a life in a case, which would be dumb, because cases are dumb. (I mean, not really, but that’s kind of the premise of this whole process, right? Anyway.) Here’s what you need:

• Sandpaper 320(or 500),800,1000,1500,2000,2500,3000 grit

• 3M Rubbing compound

• Machine Polisher ( Power Drill or small buffer)

• Microfibers

• Sticky tack and or tape

What’s great about this is that you don’t need to buy almost anything. Half the stuff you need—the microfibers, the polishing disc and the rubbing compound—is included in a $15 3M headlight restoration kit , and you can use just about any crappy household drill for the buffing stage.

In any case, the results are stunning, and the documentation meticulous, so if you’ve got a few hours, a few bucks and an iPhone that looks like a piece of shitty sea glass, why not? [Macrumors via Gadget Lab]
